The history of the English language

The English language has a long and complex history, with roots in several different languages. The earliest forms of English were spoken by the Germanic peoples who settled in England in the 5th and 6th centuries. These peoples were the Angles, the Saxons, and the Jutes. The language they spoke was called Old English, and it was very different from the English we speak today.

Over the centuries, the English language has been influenced by many other languages, including Latin, French, and Scandinavian languages. This has resulted in a rich and varied vocabulary. English has also been influenced by the cultures of the countries where it is spoken. For example, American English has been influenced by the Native American cultures, as well as the cultures of the many immigrant groups who have settled in the United States.

A língua inglesa tem uma longa e complexa história, com raízes em várias línguas diferentes. As primeiras formas de inglês foram faladas pelos povos germânicos que se estabeleceram na Inglaterra nos séculos V e VI. Esses povos eram os anglos, os saxões e os jutos.
